New York Fashion Week Round - Up

I personally found New York spring 2010 Fashion week on the whole pretty amateurish. Most (not all) of the shows were pretty bleak, with a limited colour range and dejavu designs. Although most disappointing of all for me had to be Rodarte - my ex-favourite brand sent thier models out resembling zombies, tattooed in some ancient tribe symbols, wearing what looked like rags sewn together half heartedly.

I did however manage to find 5 looks that I have rated my favourite from the week........ Enjoy!

It is hard to believe that Albertine Tucknott only recently graduated from fashion college, as the style and finish of her designs look as if they were made by someone with years of experience. I decided I had to interview Albertine, to find out how her collection is going and what inspires her stunning designs.

me - When, why and where did you decide you wanted to be a fashion designer?

Albertine - I don't think it was ever a conscious decision, I kinda fell into it at first, I'm very glad now that I did!
I've always been a creative person, I studied photography and fine art in Brighton so Fashion Design seemed like a natural progression to me at the time, a step into the creative unknown!
But when I think back fashion and design were a big part of my childhood, I grew up in a very creative home, my mother inspired me a lot, she has amazing style and the best clothes!

me - What was your favourite moment throughout your fashion college womens wear design course and why?

Albertine - I think it would have to be winning the Coast competition in the second year. Our brief was to design a dress and print for the brand, and they picked mine which went into store that year and became an instant best seller! Through this I was offered a placement with Coast. The time I spent working for them really made me realise a lot about what I wanted. It was an invaluable experience, and fantastic to see how the high street works.

me - Have you worked/ interned for any designers in the past, if so who and did you find it a valuable learning experience?

Albertine - After deciding to study fashion design as my foundation pathway in Brighton I started interning for the lingerie designer Jane de Lacey, I was quite determined even then, and if I wanted something I would go straight for it! Among others I also spent some time at Markus Lupher and Jonathan Saunders. Working for Markus Lupher was great, he is very creative so it was fantastic to be able to produce his vision!

me - What is it like to launch your own line, what in your opinion are the advantages and disadvantages of working for yourself?

Albertine - Well it's early days yet! But working for myself is fantastic if a little scary!

me - Has the current recession affected your fashion brands launch, if so how?

Albertine -I think the recession makes everyone move things up a gear making everyone more creative, which is fantastic because now is the time that individuality really shines, but it does mean that the competition is fabulously fierce!

me - Do you have a favourite designer that inspires you, who and why?

Albertine - I don't have one favourite designer, the ones that I find inspiring are the ones who are always striving for the 'new' not the same old same old!

me - What are your favourite trends for next season?

Albertine - I would say wear whatever makes you feel fabulous! I'm not a big follower of trends as such, real style stays in style!

me - Have your designs ever been used in magazine shoots? for which magazines and did it have a positive response?

Albertine - I've had quite a few shoots recently that are due out September/October time, watch this space. . .

me - Your graduate collection had a sort of dramatic, monotheistic theme what inspired this?

Albertine - One major influence for this collection was Fellini! His films 'Roma' and 'Casonova' are works of art, I could watch them over and over.

me - Can you give any tips to the future generation of fashion designers?

Albertine - Do as much interning as you can fit in!

Chantelle Znideric is someone who I can truly call a fashionista. As a celebrity stylist, personal shopper, fashion writer/blogger, and founder of highly esteemed styling agency - Top-Stylista and online personal shopping site iSylista.com Chantelle is a strong influence to the fashion world.

Below is an interview I did with her - Enjoy!

me - When, and why did you decide to be a personal stylist?

Chantelle - I decided in 2006 on a beach in the Domincan Republic that it was time to pursue my dream career of becoming a personal stylist. At the time I was working full time as a senior graphic designer and I had been in this industry for over 10 years. I couldn’t think of anything better than the thought of running my own business and working in Fashion, doing something that I knew I would LOVE! From a very early age I always had a passion for all things fashion. I spent ages making my own clothes, creating look books and designing my own shoe collections! Pursuing a career in personal styling was a natural progression from designing corporate brand identities for companies and I knew I would get more job satisfaction and reward from assisting individual clients with their image.

I set up TopStylista.com, my fashion blog when I got back from my Dominican Republic holiday in order to test the market. Women wrote to me with their fashion dilemmas and I got a huge amount of enjoyment out of suggesting outfits for them. By the end of the year I had enrolled with an image academy to do a professional course in Image Consultancy. As soon I completed the course I quit my job and started up my own Image Consultancy called TopStylista (http://www.personal-stylist.co.uk/).

me - What inspired you to launch iStylista.com?

Chantelle - The majority of my clients are professional females of around 30, my own age. They work incredibly hard and have busy, hectic social calendars, some have families and others run their own businesses; regardless of whether they are in or out of work they like to look stylish and portray an effortless style. Most hire me to help them create a stylish capsule wardrobe every season to save them time and money. With online shopping becoming increasingly popular and efficient I wanted to create an online personal stylist website and personal shopping concierge service to help women make the right purchases online for their uniqueness. iStylista.com’s core value is being able to offer our members complete convenience and is based on providing them with the best choice of designer fashion within one website. Each member can access their very own private online changing room 24/7 and then be presented with the clothes that are only suited to them.

me - What are the positives and negatives (if there are) of your job?

Chantelle - The bit I most enjoy about my job is spending one to one time with a client and being able to help them achieve the right image for them whilst also building on their confidence and self esteem. Most clients are now very good friends so it’s always a pleasure shopping with them each season.

me - What is your favourite fashion trend for next season?

Chantelle - As I am a typical pear shape I am loving these fierce shoulder pads, details and embellishments on tops and dresses! You’ll also see me wearing lots of deep berry shades, as it’s my favourite colour and I am in love with anything with complete minimalism as it’s striking, fitted and structured.

me - In your opinion what item should people invest on during the current recession?

Chantelle - In my opinion people should invest in classic pieces that you can wear season after season, which won’t date but I stand by this recession or no recession. A dress that exudes your femininity will always make you feel sexy and the fabulous thing is that you can change the look of it for any occasion day or evening, for work or smart/casual with different accessories and shoes.

me - Do you have a favourtite designer, who and why?

Chantelle - I don’t really have a favourite designer; I like to wear a mixture of high street, designer, secondhand and vintage, which makes my style individual.
Having said that this season I am in love with Vivienne Westwood Anglomania, I will wear these dresses continually for work.

me - Have you recently spotted any up and coming designers with lots of potential?

Chantelle - I really like Thurley, I bought my wedding dress recently from this designer and I love it! It’s very feminine and I’d love to see more of her work and collection some time.

me - What are your 4 favourite items in your wardrobe at the moment?

Chantelle - 1) My faithful black leather bomber jacket with three quarter sleeves, I’ve had it for years and I must admit I seem to live in it.
2) A pair of new black patent platform courts from Russell & Bromley, they are incredibly minimalist, I can wear them with anything and they’ll last for years.
3) A lilac pleated chiffon bolero – very feminine and vintage!
4) My gorgeous Thurley wedding dress that I can’t wait to wear in December.

me - What are your favourite fashion boutiques worldwide?

Chantelle - I have stumbled across a few in my time in Paris, Jakarta, Dubai and New York but I didn’t take note of what they were called. I still have the clothes that I bought in them, which reminds me of them.

me - Who do you wish to trade wardrobes with from the past or present and why?

Chantelle - I’d love to trade wardrobes with some like Kylie Minogue or Cheryl Cole, I know that nothing would fit but I’d love to have a rummage through their evening dresses and stage outfits. I went to see Kylie’s Showgirl concert a few years ago and the outfits were amazing!

me - When was ioannisdimitrousis launched and what inspired you to launch it?

Yannis - February 2006. I've always had an interest in arts, clothing and design, so it was an easy decision. I knew I didn't want to work for anyone but myself and designing was the only way I could express myself. I knew in the first years it would be difficult however, my creativity became very popular very quickly and now at a young age through hard work I can say I am already established.

me - Describe the "perfect ioannisdimitrousis woman" in 5 words?

Yannis - Strong, sharp, sensitive, empowered, sexy

me - What was your Fall 09 collection inspired by - what was its theme?
Yannis - Pain..Lots of pain..The dark feeling of the collection emphasizes the inner pain of the body. Caging it through the needles and chains with the flesh exposure asks you to look beyond the body and observe the inside.

me - For how many years has ioannisdimitrousis's collection been presented in London Fashion Week?

Yannis - I have been showing my work at LFW since Feb '06 and after the initial showing at fashion week I was featured in publications such as International Herald Tribune by Suzy Menkes, Let Them Eat Cake and other major magazines and books. The last four seasons are in the form of catwalk shows.

me - What are your favourite trends for Fall/Winter 09?

Yannis - I'm inspired by multi-cultural influences combined with innovative textile design, which provides an eclectic mix and originality.

me - Who is your style inspiration from the past or present, and why?
Yannis - chav elegance

me - Where do you hope to see ioannisdimitrousis in 10 years time?

Yannis - Everywhere..!

me - What is your favourite high street shop and why?

Yannis - i am not sure if i have any....

Yannis - Work hard and follow your dream...Nothing comes easy, and if it does, then you won't know what success means. You will succeed only when you will straggle to get to the top and remain on top...

Gail Sorronda's feminine, utterly gorgeous, chic designs are what caused her to win the "Mercedes Benz - Start Up Awards" back in 2005 leading her onto Australian Fashion Week and then in 2007 to create a collection for Target, as part of the "designers for Target" collaboration. Her collections are sold in many shops and boutiques all around Australia, and I'm sure her label will go on to be sold worldwide!

me - When was Gail Sorronda launched and what inspired it to be launched?

Gail - The label was launched at Rosemount Australian Fashion week in 2005 after winning the Mercedez Benz start-up award. I decided whilst I was studying that I wanted to develop a collection that I would like to sell.

me - Describe the "perfect Gail Sorronda woman" in 5 words?

Gail - In love with a feeling

me - ss09/10 collection inspired by - what was its theme?

Gail - A ritual like exotic birds dancing.
The rare and dominant species are introduced in an awkward embrace.
The love spreads and takes over like an invasive exotic.

"Invasive Exotics” is inspired by a new environment.

Paris has the worlds textiles and invention at my disposal which has meant greater exploration of silhouette, bringing opposite textures together, a sense of discipline and the continuation of dark romanticism.

me - For how many years has Gail Sorronda's collection been presented in Rosemount Australian Fashion Week?

Gail - Every year since 2005. Sometimes off site. Sometimes off schedule.

me - What are your favourite trends for Fall/Winter 09?

Gail - Layering interesting pieces with basics. Playful details. Volume in easy to wear elasticised garments.

me - Who is your style inspiration from the past or present, and why?

Gail - Architect Zaha Hadid. Her visionary asthetic has been applied to many mediums of design.

me - Where do you hope to see Gail Sorronda in 10 years time?

Gail - Label wise improving and developing distribution whilst maintaining a niche market. Career wise I’ll be following the signs.

me - What is your favourtie high street shop and why?

Gail - Top Shop for their accessibility and affordability.

me - What is your favourite fashion boutiques worldwide and why?

Gail - L’Eclaireur in Paris because it stocks my designers that inspire me and it presents a feeling.

The Corner Shop in Sydney as they are great supporter of young Australian designers.

me - Have you got any tips for aspiring fashion designers?

Basically be willing to sacrifice eg doing work for free, searching for an internship or work experience. Work in any capacity in the industry as it may open a door. Be resourceful with what you do know. Be brave and willing to feel uncomfortable. Be honest and disciplined with your work creatively

me - Did you attend many of the London Fashion week fall 09 shows, if so did you have any favorutie collections?.

Frankie - As an assistant I didn’t get to attend that many shows but I did go to the Eun Jeong show which was amazing, gorgeous bursts of coral, fringed tights are a must have for AW ‘09..

me - On a standard working day what is your office dress code?

Frankie - We all have our own individual styles.. Some you wonder if they wake up looking that glamorous, others rock the London Kate Moss look! As long as your comfortable we have no real dress code..

me - Who is your fashion inspiration/idol?

Frankie - more programme than icon.. Gossip Girl is my latest style obsession (The City following in close pursuit!) Season two, summer for the Manhattan elite, between all the drama, the girls work holiday glamour to perfection with bejewelled kaftans, straw bags and metallic sandals..

me - In your opinion are high heels a necessity to finish off an outfit?

Frankie - There has been real debates about high heels recently, the health issues surrounding a good pair of Jimmy’s but personally, at 5’2 they are the finishing touch to any outfit..

me - What is your opinion on some of the latest trends that are very unflattering- e.g. harem pants?

Frankie - I don’t own a pair of Harem pants, I think trends are a lot of fun, not a necessity, I think if they don’t flatter you its not compulsory to follow.. – try another trend.. I’d swap Harem pants for a bit of the 1950s styling trend, I would look way too much like ‘Cant Touch This!!’..

me - What type of woman is my-wardrobe.com aimed at?

Frankie -We aim to target all woman, anyone with a sense of style, who likes to treat themselves! Don’t forget men’s too!

me - When was MiH jeans launched and what inspired you to launch it?

Chloe - MiH Jeans was originally launched in 1969 by my godfather, and re-launched about 4 years ago. I couldn’t find a mid-rise pair of jeans on the market that I wanted to wear, and thought other people must be having the same problem, even though it is what the original brand offered as well first time around. Inspired by the archives I decided to create a product which was clean and sophisticated, and not really low rise, which every jean seemed to be at the time.

me - Describe the "perfect MiH jeans woman" in 5 words?

Chloe - Successful, determined, busy, chic, individual.

me - What was your latest jeans collection inspired by?

Chloe - The AW09 collection, which will be in stores this summer, was inspired by feedback from our customers and MiH fans as to what they really want to wear and what they would like to see in the new range. The washes follow a palette of real, earthy tones including muted slate grey, inky black-blue and classic jet black, and classic cuts are given a sophisticated edge in the smartest, best quality denims, with tonal stitching, highlighted by traditional studs and rivets.

me - What is your favourite look/style to pair your jeans with?

Chloe - For day I always wear my London jeans with Converse and a white t-shirt, and for evening I dress the same jeans up with heels, blazer and feminine top.

me - What are your favourite trends for Fall/Winter 09?

Chloe - Statement shoes and the continuing obsession with denim!

me - Who is your style inspiration from the past or present, and why?

Chloe - My Mum [the original MiH in-house model] has always been a muse to me – no one makes a t-shirt and jeans look better than she does!

me - Where do you hope to see MiH jeans in 10 years time?

Chloe - In 10 years I hope the collection will have expanded into jeans for men and children, and we will have our own retail stores as well as continuing to be stocked in all the best stores around the world.

me - What was your favourite Fashion Week Collection for Fall 09?

Chloe - I loved Marc Jacobs AW09 show – I thought it was very coherent with many wearable pieces.

me - What is your favourite fashion boutiques worldwide and why?

Chloe - I adore Biffi in Milan for it’s unique choices, Barneys for having everything I could ever want under one roof, Beckley in LA and Matches in London for the same reason despite being much smaller stores.

me - Have you got any tips for aspiring fashion designers?

Chloe - To work hard, be dedicated to your craft and never take no for an answer!

When I attended London Fashion Week (the exhibition) I was truly inspired by Nina Dolcetti'sstunning, unique, sculptural shoe designs. Little did I know that they were all eco - friendly (shhhh I would have bought them anyway). As described on her website, "Nina Dolcetti shoes represent a new breed of conscious design, that confidently walks the line between decadent pleasures and environmental awareness". As soon as I returned home, I immediately contacted Elisalex - the founder of Nina Dolcetti to ask abit more about the backround of her brand etc........

me - When and where did you first decide you wanted to be a shoe designer?

Elisalex - I've always loved the daintyness and symmetry of shoes, I used to draw pages and pages of shoes as a child and was obsessed with Barbie shoes. I decided I wanted to design shoes towards the end of school and then my passion was cemented while learning to make them at Cordwainers.

me - What characteristics does a shoe need in order to be elegant and stylish?

Elisalex - I think elegance and style are two very different things. In order for a shoe to be elegant the lines need to be sinuous and elongate the woman's leg. In order to be stylish, anything goes! - shoes become like little twin sculptures...

me - On your website it says that your designs "confidently walk the line between decadent pleasures and environmental awareness"....... explain how your shoes are made to be environmentally friendly?

Elisalex - My shoes are made using pre-consumer waste - basically left overs. There is so much left over from the fashion industry - off-cuts, colour swatches, scraps, even bits deemed to be faulty or damaged - and I think it's important to use that up instead of creating demand for more "new" stuff. Otherwise it would just be wasted by going into landfill or being incinerated.

me - Where do you find inspirations for your shoe designs?

Elisalex- I find that inspiration comes in waves. I never know where or when I'll get a wave, but they last about 5 days and come every few months or so.

me - Where would you like to see yourself and your brand in 10 years time?

Elisalex - In 10 years time I'd like for my brand to be internationally recognised, and selling worldwide. Which I reckon is probably the goal of most designers out there...! I hope to expand, but into what is still secret...

me - What advice can you give to the fashion conscious youth of today (future designers etc)?

Elisalex - I don't really feel qualified to give advice... I'll have to get back to you on that one!

When I came across Alexandra Groovers stunningly elegant, dark, quirky, sheek designs which were presented for the first time during the recent Fall 09 fashion week as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout - I decided I had no choice but to interview her for my blog.......

me - What is your favourite trend for fall 09?

Alexandra - Big jewellery- it's about time it came back- it is such a nice way to make a statement with one's outfit.

me - When did you launch your brand?

Alexandra - I had a soft launch for the label in 2008, and my first official catwalk show was this past February 2009.

me - If you could steal anyones wardrobe from past or present, who's would it be and why?

Alexandra - Ooh, there are too many good choices- but I think Cleopatra would be up there- the Egyptians were so extravagant from their clothing, to their jewellery, hairstyles and makeup.

me - Where do you find inspirations for your designs?

Alexandra - I mostly take inspiration from the natural sciences, but this season, I will take this inspiration with the addition of researching the mythology associated with my natural subjects.

me - When and where did you decide you wanted to be a designer?

Alexandra - I grew up with a jeweler mother and a painter father and a furniture designer who was my babysitter- I think it was pretty much my destiny to become a designer or an artist! But my interest in clothing as a form of design most definitely began when my mother signed me up for my first sewing class when I was 10 years old.

me - Describe the perfect "Alexandra Groover" woman?

Alexandra - The Alexandra Groover woman is one that is very stylish, but also does not blindly follow all of the current fashion trends. She is more individual and prefers to invest in pieces that will compliment her existing wardrobe and not be thrown away after one season. When designing, I keep in mind that I would like each design to be a special, yet classic piece that the customer will want to keep for years and years.

me - What is you favourite fashion boutique?

Alexandra - Max Field in Los Angeles, California, USA

me - Can you give any tips to aspiring fashion designers?

Alexandra - The ones who fail are the ones who give up. Or I perhaps it is best left to man who says it best:

"If one remains as careful at the end as he was at the beginning, there will be no failure." Lao-Tzu

me - What was it like to present your collection in London Fashion Week as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout?

Alexandra - It was a great honor to be able to present a professional catwalk show to the press and public. Thanks to Vauxhall Fashion Scout, I was able to do this. It couldn't have been better. I had a great team of people helping me make it the successful show that it was.

Mark Fast is a newly established knitwear designer who recently showcased his designs in fall 09 London Fashion Week - below is an interview with his managing director Amanda May, and some of his newest collections looks!

me - When, and why did you decide to persue a career in fashion marketing?

Amanda - In 1995 I was sixteen and I worked as an intern for Shania Twain. Ithought her fan merchandise needed to reflect her younger audience soI made some sketches and showed them to her. She liked them and I gotto go to New York to work with the people at PolyGram Merchandisingfor a day. I felt soooooo lucky!>

me - Describe the perfect Mark Fast woman in 5 words?

Amanda - Intelligent, cinematic, mysterious, hypnotic, sculpted.>

me - What is your favourite trend for fall 09?

Amanda - Well, obviously knitwear... I'm pretty excited about sequins too.>

me - Who is your style inspiration from the past or present and why?

Amanda - My style is kind of a mix between Debbie Harry and JacquelineKennedy-Onassis with a dash of vintage bohemian. Debbie Harry is socool and Jackie O was so chic. I found them both fascinating when Iwas growing up. I also love vintage shopping, they have the bestvintage stores called Value Village in Canada, they're reallyinexpensive. I would always find myself drawn to long feminine printeddresses and nightgowns. I was in Toronto for Fashion Week in March andI went to the local Value Village and found an acid washed denim dressexactly the same as one my mum had when I was little. I haven't wornit yet, I'm saving it for something special.

me - What was your best fashion buy this season?

Amanda - I'm crushing on a pair of silver See by Chloe sandals at Browns Focus.I'm sure they are going to be my favourite summer shoes and good shoesare so important.

When was Matches boutique launched and what gap in the fashion market was it aiming to fill?

Matches was launched in 1988 in Wimbledon . Impeccable customer service has always been at the forefront of the business from its launch. Although the product was quite different initially; it then developed into a new concept focusing on luxury product.

Did you have any favourite collection in Fall 09 Fashion week?

The Freda collection for AW09 was my favourite because Jo Sykes is now designing it. Second would be Jo Sykes own collection, ‘Sykes’ which is exclusive to Matches. Sykes has been my favourite collection for the past 3 seasons and I don’t understand why she’s not more famous than she is!

Are there any new up and coming designers that you see a lot of potential in do become a worldwide fashion house in the future?

Jo Sykes and Mary Katrantzou and also Hannah Martin for her jewellery, which is so right for now - real jewellery with a totally modern aesthetic.

How many different designers does Matches boutique stock at the moment?

Matches stocks 50 menswear brands and approximately 107 women’s wear collections, (split between our international stores and our Spy stores.)

What are your favourite trends for Fall/ Winter 09?

The over the knee boot, especially the flat ones from Stella McCartney, the waistcoat jacket as seen at Sykes and 1940s as seen at Roksanda, Lanvin and Bottega Veneta.

Who would you say is your style inspiration from the past or present- and why?

Diane von Furstenberg because she is a dear friend who I continue to be inspired by. I am totally energized by her – she is a real life style guru.

Where do you hope to see Matches boutique in 10 years time?

With a bigger online business at Matchesfashion.com, to have developed our own Freda line and to be wholesaling the collection internationally and for our shops to still offer the consumer a retail experience that feels like a leisure activity. Supporting cutting edge new designers and helping them to come to the forefront, whilst still making service the number one thing.

Push It magazine is a really quirky, trendy new fashion magazine which was launched this year. Push It magazine features stunning photo shoots from fresh talent, different unique styles of art, new up and coming bands and singers and all the latest styles and trends.
I interviewed the editor Gabriel below........

me - When was Push It magazine launched?

Gabriel - PUSH IT was launched on the 12th January 2009 at about 2am in the morning. I remember as I had been up all night for the previous 3 weeks working solidly, and I will never forget the moment, I got email to say that the site was live and that the whole world was able to see what we had been doing. It was a mixture of fear, excitement and a feeling of "thank the lord" it's out there. The response have been amazing, as there was a serious need for PUSH IT.

me - What motivated you to become a fashion journalist?

Gabriel - Well when I first started out, I was a stylist. I loved styling, but always hated having to do the rounds returning the clothes, but it was a great entry into the fashion world. Through styling and working part-time at clubs, I got my big break doing presenting for MTV in the states, which allowed me to be nosey and ask loads of intruding and personal questions. It fuelled my love for journalisim - discovering new things and the ability to watch, learn and listen. After MTV, I worked for other magazines as a Fashion and Social Editor before deciding to start PUSH IT.

me - What makes Push It magazine unique from all the other fashion magazines?

Gabriel - Well PUSH IT, is really a magazine for the people. Yes, its a lifestyle/fashion magazine, but its also a magazine giving people a chance to be published and giving the many talented people a voice. It's also Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina's first international style magazine. International, as we like to mix the best of Balkan talent alongside the best of international talent. I had been to Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, many times and met so many talented people that I became inspired to do something for them: the unspoken and un-represented art/fashion world.

me - What are your favourite trends for S/S 09?

Gabriel - That's a hard one, as I don't personally like trends. I have a hard time accepting a notion of a set way, colour, style or detail that we must adhere to, or will be enforced on us. Its hard to escape that as buyers ultimately decide what we can or can't buy, but I tend to go against the grain. Saying that i do love the bleached and ripped trend. Ripped and bleached denim has always had a special place in my heart.

me - What were your favourite collections for Fall 09 during Fashion Week?

Gabriel - Well I am going to be predictable and say the obvious: McQueen - Genius! Apart from McQueen, I'm like everyone else, loving,loving, loving Balmain. Personally, I really want to own most of the pieces from Raf Simmons last collection.

me - Are there any up and coming designers you see lots of potential in?

Gabriel - Well my key focus is the Balkans, and there are so any great designers there that should really be a lot further in their careers than they are allowed to be. One of my favourites is Dejan Despotović who is a young Serbian designer. He has a great way with material, textures and most importantly (for me as an ex-stylist) he knows about a looks. UK wise I'm still loving Cassette Playa and new kids on the block Jaiden RVA James. I love their approach to menswear.

me - What is you favourite boutique worldwide?

Gabriel - My favourite boutiques are any concept stores, we can walk around pick things up, see things I have never seen before and not get hassled. So at the moment the list includes Collette in Paris, Dover Street Market, Kokon To Zai and Selfridges. I will let you know the new list, if I get thrown out of any of them.

me - Where would you like to see Push It magazine in 10 years?

Gabriel - It's a tough one and a secret one - lol. Where will PUSH IT be in 10 years time... you will have to wait and see! More importantly I hope that all the readers and fans of PUSH IT are able to gain something, read something or appreciate something interesting. There are so many magazines writing the same things, that at PUSH IT, we deliberately only feature or write something if its of interest, not just to fill space.

me - Are there any tips or advice you could give to aspiring/future fashion journalists reading - cocobutterlipbalmx - ?

Gabriel - Never give up, keep on going, if one door closes, knock on the door again....

When and why did you decide to launch Brown boutique?

We launched in 1970. My son Simon, who is now the CEO of Browns, had a Saturday job working in a shop that is now Browns and when he heard it was for sale he suggested to us we buy it and launch our own boutique.

How many designers collections did Browns stock when it was first launched in comparison to today?

Very few: it wasn’t the same then at all. We stocked people like Daniel Hechter, Emanuel Khan and Cacherel. Then Missoni and Sonia Rykiel

Did you have any favourite designers collections amongst the fall 09 London/Paris/Milan/ New York fashion week shows?

Lanvin, Dries van Noten and Marni

What timeless garment/accesory should every woman invest in?

A nice piece of jewellery. Fashion comes and goes but good jewellery is timeless.

Which up and coming designer do you see lots of potential in to become a world renowned name in fashion?

We think Mark Fast and Mary Katrantzou, who we currently stock in Browns Focus, are very talented and will go far

What are your favourite trends for fall 09?

Over-the-knee boots, wide-shouldered jackets and skinny leggings. Not retro though, all very modern.

me - When and where did you first decide you wanted to be a fashion designer?

Lorena- It was never a conscious decision I had always been interested in fashion and clothing and experimenting with my scissors on everything I could get my hands on to the dismay of my poor mother.

me - Where do you find inspirations for your designs?

Lorena - Inspiration comes from everywhere but I mostly design from something that I feel so strongly about that I want to experience it completely, living and breathing everything I can on the subject. Whether it is rock and roll, a political issue or a painting by a talented new artist.

me - Do you believe that fashion should always be comfortable?

Lorena - Fashion is a form of self expression, something very personal and unique to every individual therefore fashion shouldn't be anything in particular but something that will suit the needs of each character and whatever is most important to them.

me - Describe the perfect Lorena de La Tore woman in 5 words?

Lorena - Intelligent, daring, elegant, sexy and confident.

me - What was your favourite piece from you fall 09 collection and why?

Lorena - The Revolution dress embodies both the collection and the spirit of the brand in terms of silhouette and design. I also like the fact that it challenges the customer as it is not an easy dress to wear and so it is for a person with a sense of humor who wants to wear something different.

me - How would you describe your personal style?

Lorena - My brand reflects my personal style as I design clothes that I'm interested in, clothes that excite me, that I understand and want to wear.

me - What are your favourite fashion boutiques?

Lorena - Any boutique with some character and unique pieces that has been put together with a genuine idea in mind as for instance a shop that will source unknown designers and presents them in an innovative way like an art exhibition for example.

me - Where would you like to see your brand in 10 years?

Lorena - I would like the brand to still be known by the same ideas that drive it today. A brand that produces unique garments that are timeless and original with an emphasis on quality but are also conceptual and fun.

me - Can you give any tips to the future generation of designers?

Lorena - For the business side, the most important thing is to have connections for sourcing fabrics and manufacturing so it just makes life easier if you can work for another company before starting your own.
Finally the most important advice is just to keep going no matter what, eventually everything falls into place but it might take a while so never give up.

I was fascinated looking through photos of Etro's fall 09 fashion week show, eyeing their stunning aztec prints, decorating long flowy, intricately cut dresses and jumpsuits! Their signature paisley print is mind boggling-ly gorgeous. Well all this is not too suprising - seeing as their company is still standing strong (and as fashionable as ever) after twenty six years since its launch in 1963 in a small boutique in Milan. Etro is the perfect example of timeless glamour......... and I have interviewed Kelly Frey the PR manager of Etro USA to hear more about the brand and how she got to work for it etc.

me - As the PR manager of Etro USA what type of tasks do you have to do?

Kelly - In one word EDITORIAL COVERAGE! It’s really the single most important aspect for any brand even with all the new technology it always goes back to the root of it all - Fashion is beautiful and nothing shows it off better than that full page editorial in Vogue! It’s important for any brand to get maximum exposure, so every month it’s crunch time making sure the right product gets out to our top editors for upcoming shoots…especially the cover shoots! Then there are the Fashion shows, we show 4 times a year in Milan so preparing for those shows takes up a big part of our lives making sure everything gets off without a hitch, it can be a fast and furious process but once the first model takes the runway it’s glorious.

me - Did you always aspire to work in the PR sector of fashion or did you initially plan to go into design, or buying etc.

Kelly - I was actually a Journalism major and honestly thought I would end up changing the world by writing those stories that make you see things in a different light, but fate led me in a different way and it couldn’t have worked out better if I had planned it myself

me - Describe the perfect Etro woman in 5 words?

Kelly - Not afraid to wear color

me - What is your favourite piece from the Etro fall 09 collection- describe it?

Kelly - This Fall collection was truly an amazing work of art, but over all I always fall for the finale look
There are few things in life that sparkle more than the perfect cocktail dress, it’s love at first sight!

me - What is/ are your favourite boutiques?

Kelly - Opening ceremony , What Comes Around Goes Around, Chloe, Jonathan Adler (for home), Guarlain (fragrance shop in Paris I love all the bottles.

me - How would you describe your personal style?

Kelly - I’m a Mix and matcher , uptown/ downtown whatever town I throw it all in together and make it work. I love the fanciful pieces of the runway, but on a daily I keep it simple with a strong addiction to oversized cardigan sweaters and silk printed dresses. I do love black as much as I love color even after 2 years at ETRO it’s still always chic and perfect for any occasion, but it’s not as fun as a pretty paisley print.

Kelly - Read your books; fashion magazines cover to cover. They are the mirror of the industry and reflect everything that is happening right now in fashion. Go out! everywhere and anywhere, networking is the key to success in any industry and especially in the fashion world. Most importantly pick a job you love to do and it will never feel like work

me - When and where did you first decide you wanted to be a fashion designer

Honestly, it just sort of happened, it wasn’t something I decided on. Growing up my aunt had a jewelry and ceramics studio where I spent a huge amount of time playing with wire, clay, soldering and working with stones, it made me fall in love with the act of creating things, even when they were ugly, at a very young age. I love storytelling and I think that the combination of the two, for me, is fashion. It’s a physical narrative that draws on so many different aspects of creativity. Some of my favorite pieces are still weird old masks I made out of plaster when I was in elementary school

me - Where do you find inspirations for your designs

Charlotte - Everywhere! I think that the most beautiful things about fashion is that it draws on so many sources. Nature, books, legos, vegetables, art, music, politics.... Weather.....

me - Describe your autumn/winter 09 collection in 5 words

Charlotte - The Fall Winter 2009 Collection is inspired by the classic film Wings of Desire, by Wim Wenders, It is the poignant story of an angel who guards over a colorless East Berlin and sacrifices his wings for a life of simple human sensations when he falls in love with a circus performer. The themes of black and white blossoming into color, delight in the minimalist joys of human experience and the magic of the circus come together in an ethereal and dramatic collection

me - What advice can you give to the younger generation of future designers

Charlotte - Be true to

yourself, make your own way, don’t follow trends or what others are doing or what you have done in the past that has been successful too closely. The most successful designers are those who don’t focus on being successful, rather they focus on creating something truly special and artistic

me - What influences your designs - music, art, foreign cultures...... etc

Charlotte - I think nature and foreign places more than anything. Turkey and the Whirling dervishes are a real source of inspiration currently

me - What are your favourite boutiques/ shops

Charlotte - My favorite boutique is called Ludivine in the West Village in NY. I think wandering vintage shops and flea markets is the best of all though
